Position: Race Officer

Bio:
Kwabena arrived in the United Kingdom from Grenada in 1960 to join his parents, who had responded to Britain’s urgent call for assistance from the colonies to help rebuild the country following the war. Growing up in North London, where he attended the local comprehensive, Kwabena says that he has seen a huge transformation for the good in the lives of the people and the nation. Leaving school with few certificates, Kwabena undertook further studies and gained admission to the Polytechnic of Central London, where he obtained a BA in Law. Shortly thereafter, he joined the staff of the Grenada High Commission to work for the administration of Maurice Bishop as the European Trade Officer. In this role he, amongst other things, represented the Grenada Government in trade arrangements with numerous European governments and British firms. In doing so he played a small part in boosting the economic well being of the people of Grenada. His last major role was as Grenada’s representative at the 6th UN Conference on Trade and Development in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia. After this period Kwabena entered UK local government service, working as an equalities manager with a north London local authority. He then headed the equalities department of a major UK charity before returning to local government, with a posting in a south London council. Went on to become the equalities manager of a major university. On retirement he worked as a professional private hire driver and a became a driver-members’ representative of the GMB. Kwabena remains firm in his view that the development of equal opportunities, race equality in particular, is vital to the development of a just and equitable global society and to the continued enhancement of the social and economic life in this country KDN
